Pillar 1: Christ-centered
Christ-centered counseling means that your
relationship with our Father-God through Jesus Christ will be our primary focus
in counselor. Jesus Christ has center stage in my office because He "is
all, and in all" (Col 3:11). Therefore, in
your sessions with me, I will attempt to practice the presence of Jesus Christ at all times,
and co-labor with the Holy Spirit in His ministry to you (see 1 Corinthians 3:9). I will view our
counseling relationship as God's instrument of
healing and for drawing you closer to Christ.
Jesus and Your Uniqueness
Christ-centered means that our focus will be on the unique "chemistry"
between you and Jesus. In the book of John, we read how Jesus interacts in
different ways with Nathaniel (John 1:49-51), Nicodemus (John 3), the woman at
the well (John 4). Jesus does not interact with any two people in exactly the
same way. Because you are made in God's image, He knows you far better than
you know yourself. Your personality and your problems may be a mystery to you,
but not to Jesus. You are a unique mold for His dwelling. You are the lock;
Jesus is the key. Moreover, your unique gifts and talents reflect how you can
glorify God in some unique way through Christ. As C. S. Lewis wrote:
Each of the redeemed shall
forever know and praise some one aspect of the divine beauty better than any
other creature can
. . . If all experienced God in the same way and returned Him
an identical worship, the song of the Church triumphant would have no symphony,
it would be like an orchestra in which all the instruments played the same note.
(Problem of Pain, 1962, Collier Books, p. 150).
Jesus and Your Life-Story
Over the years in my counseling practice, I have
ministered to very prominent people with glamorous lifestyles, and to people
with very humble lifestyles. Regardless of outer appearances, I have learned
firsthand when God steps into our lives, we find rich meaning in whatever we do.
God has a mission, a calling, for each of us. Christ-centered counseling means
that you have a story to tell, a sub-plot of Jesus' own story, called "the
greatest story ever told." That's right. Your life, no matter how ordinary
it seems, is a part of the larger picture of Jesus' story, His-story (history).
My job as your counselor is to create conditions in my office for your story to
unfold, and for you to know your calling. You see, God has spoken you
into existence for some specific purpose of His. If you saw the movie
Narnia, you may recall how the lives of Lucy and the other children were intertwined
with the power of Aslan, the Christ-figure. The entire fate of Narnia depended
upon these children. In a
similar way, I believe that your life-story has some crucial importance, and
that you have some vital mission to fulfill, in addition to growing and maturing
in Christ. The
significance and meaning of your life are rooted in a God-ordained purpose that,
in the final, ultimate scheme of things, has epic proportions, regardless of how
unglamorous your life might appear to the world. Remember, your
life-story is a subplot of Jesus' own story. The meaning of your struggles
will become more deeply and fully appreciated as we see them in the context of
the "greatest story ever told"
